Lawn Aeration
Lawn aeration is the act of removing plugs of soil or less satisfactorily spike holes in the soil. I say less satisfactorily with spikes because you have forced the soil apart which compacts it again but it is better than nothing so I’m not knocking it.
This process then creates excellent conditions for your lawn you can fill these holes with sharp sand which you can brush in. This improves drainage and allows the rain to get to the roots more readily, it also allows for fertilizer to be distributed and any soil treatments necessary.
By having this as part of your regular autumn lawn aeration treatment you will improve your lawns compaction and aid with any seeding.
Lawn Aerator
These are used as stated above to make either spike holes or actually remove plugs of soil in the lawn. There is a variety of these offered online or in garden centres and range in prices, and also the amount of work involved!
It really depends on the size of your lawn as to the option you choose. You can purchase a tine aerator which involves a lot of leg work if you have a small lawn to deal with. Or you can purchase or hire motorised or weighted ones which you push for medium sized to large lawn areas. Larger areas of lawn like schools or parks will have much larger versions which are towed.
Some machines you can buy will do both scarifying and aerating with different attachments and if you have a large area to cover this could be the tool for you.
