Complete Lawn Care Tips – Killer Tips On Having A Great Lawn

By: Avery Howe

Having a great looking lawn can be one of the easiest and quickest ways to increase your homes value.

People do not realize that the soil and the roots of the grass need air in order to grow, especially if the soil is compacted. This process of aeration just means is to perform a simple procedure or poking small holes in the lawn at regular intervals so that the oxygen can reach the roots and the water can get to them. This will help prevent thatch and increase the amount of nutrients getting to the soil. Your lawn can become compacted over time and aeration is especially important for long term health.

Adequate fertilisation is crucial point in keeping your lawn healthy and beautiful. Firstly learn what soil type you have and adjust the fertilizer to your soil needs. Over fertilizing can be harmful to your grass and make so called fertilizer burn for that reason compost is the best available fertilizer for organic lawn care .

Over-watering is one of the most common lawn problems. Too much water causes much more damage than under-watering does — this is because most varieties of turf handle short droughts fine, but can be wrecked with flooding. Brown patches (commonly a fungal infection) on the lawn can often be attributed over-watering. To avoid disaster, know the requirements of the grass type you have planted and water accordingly.

Don’t forget to pull any weed on your lawn. Include the measure to cut your grass higher,so you prevent the sunlight feed the weed. Weed have deep roots and many times you have to remove weeds digging them out by the roots, spraying weed is not very effective in fall, but if you choose it, remember to follow the indications on the herbicide label.

There you have my basic tips to keep a healthy enough lawn to make you want to defend it with your life.

Four Factors That Will Determine the Cost of Inputs in Lawn Care

Lawn

There are at least four factors which normally determine the cost of inputs required for lawn care. When we talk of inputs here, we are looking at things like the necessary grass seeds, the lawn fertilizers, the lawn pest control chemicals and the lawn weed control chemicals.

We are also looking at intangible inputs, such as labor. In irrigation-fed lawn projects, we will also be looking at the amount of water necessary for the project. And in the final analysis, these are also the factors which determine the amount of money you have to spend on the lawn project.

The four factors in question, which determine the cost of inputs in lawn care include:

1. The size of the lawn in question: in terms of total input costs, a bigger lawn will tend to call for bigger expenditures on inputs than a smaller lawn. But when you start thinking in terms of lawn care expenditure per unit lawn area, the dynamics shift. You end up in a situation where a person with a smaller lawn tends to spend (on per-unit basis) much bigger sums of money than a person with a bigger lawn. This is where, for instance, we are looking at an organization with, say, a ten acre lawn on its headquarter ‘campus.’ We compare its expenditure with an individual who owns a quarter acre lawn. It would emerge that, in terms of total costs, the organization naturally spends more on its ten-acre lawn than the individual with his quarter acre plot. But if you divide the ten acres into quarter acre plots, you end up with 40 such plots. And if you divide the organizations total expenditure by forty (to get cost per quarter acre plot), you come to notice that in most cases, what the organization ends up spending per quarter acre is significantly less than what the individual spends on his single, quarter acre lawn plot. All said and done, the explanation for this phenomenon is to be found in the so-called ‘economies of scale.’

2. Whether or not the lawn in question is a new one: this is a consideration which has a bearing on inputs such as labor, weed control and pest control. In terms of labor, for instance, a new lawn will tend to be more demanding than an old, well-established lawn. In terms of pest control, the new lawn may tend to be less demanding than an old lawn, in which various pests are likely to have gained a foothold over time.

3. The type of results desired from the lawn care project: this will have a bearing on inputs such as grass seeds, lawn fertilizers and irrigation. There are some (lush) grass varieties which call for a lot of expenditure on seeds, and even more expenditure on fertilizers and irrigation, if they are to grow into the sorts of lawns the people who invest in them envision.

4. How the lawn care input procurement is carried out: naturally, when lawn care inputs are procured in bulk, they tend to be cheaper than when they are procured in bits. This is even the case with labor – where the cost of getting people to do various individual lawn care tasks tends to be much higher than what it would take to simply give the whole lawn care project to one of the lawn service firms.

Build Your Own Bird Feeder!

Autumn Weed And Feed

Spring is on its way and all our backyard birds are hungry.  With daffodils blooming and crocuses beginning to pop their heads out of the soil, we tend to forget that food sources of seeds from autumn plants have long been blown away by winter winds and new growth hasn’t yet begun.

There’s about 2 acres of wooded land adjacent to my property for the birds, raccoons, possums and the occasional coyote.  This area has been left in its natural state, free from lawn mowers, chain saws and weed eaters.  It’s pretty much as God designed it.

We only have three bird feeders in the woods and two next to the house, but that is enough to keep us on the verge of bankruptcy.  Trying to keep wild bird food in our five homemade bird feeders full is not an easy job.  It seems as if it is the goal of every bird to do its part to empty the entire feeding station of all of its contents.

I once thought birds really cared about the appearance of their cafeterias, but I’ve learned that it doesn’t make much difference whether it is made of plastic, wood, or aluminum.  If you want to feed finches though, you need a tubular Finch feeder because it is designed to hold and distribute those tiny thistle seeds.  Almost any other feeder can be made of wood.

When I first had the idea to get something to feed birds, I went to my local bird store to buy a couple of bird feeders.  I changed my mind when I saw the prices of the simplest they had to offer.  I decided to build my own.

I went to my computer and found pictures of birds happily pecking at bird seed on a very plain looking rectangular piece of wood, with a two inch wall around it to keep all the food from falling to the ground.

The drawback to the platform type of feeder of course, is that the feed is exposed to the weather.  Put a wall on each end and a roof over the container and you have a hopper type feeder.  Searching on the internet I found blueprints to build one of these, but after reading 5 pages of detailed drawings, I built my own wild bird feeder without even printing the directions.

This type of feeding station wasn’t a good idea because the seeds strewn by the birds and fell to the ground made the perfect set up for predators, like my cat Spike. He waited behind a bush and pounced on the ground feeding birds when they flew in to gobble up the treasure that had fallen from the sky.

Now that he’s older, he just sits on a step from the deck and watches the birds, no doubt remembering the days of his youth back when they were afraid of him.  Now they just go about their business of eating the bounty on the ground without worrying about the threat of annihilation from an old yellow cat.

I went back to the computer and came up with a plan to build a bird feeder with a roof that wasn’t complicated.  There is never a shortage of building materials because someone in the neighborhood is always tossing something away.  I just drive around searching for old fencing left for the trash man.  For one feeder it doesn’t take a lot of wood or other materials.  As for design, there are many free blueprints and instructions on line.

It’s all worth it when I’m looking through my kitchen window at Cardinals, Chickadees, Titmice, Wrens and numerous other colorful and cheery friends I welcome on a daily basis.

Is a Wildlife Garden the Right Style for You?

Autumn Weed And Feed

I am lucky enough to live in a rural area within easy reach of various country footpaths, which take you through different natural habitats. There are woodland walks, a coastal path, grassland areas and one or two large ponds with all the associated wildlife. Each area has it’s own natural beauty and the wild plants can easily compete in shape form and colour with the cultivated varieties.

When planning a wildlife garden it is a good idea to visit any country walks or parks in your area, so that you can get an idea of what natural species grow there, and the type of wildlife that lives in your area. You can then plan your garden around what is found naturally in your neighbourhood.

To attract birds you need to provide plants that offer shelter, food and nesting spaces. Along with this you should incorporate water for them to drink. This can either be in the form of a pond, ornamental bird baths or simply tubs filled with water scattered around the garden.

There are plenty of plants that can be grown in your garden that are both attractive and good food sources for the local bird population. Mountain ash (Rowan) provides an abundance of berries in the autumn which birds love. Dog woods, pheasant berry, viburnum and cotoneasters will also provide your birds with berries. Perennials flowers provide seeds for other birds. Sunflowers are a good example of these.

Birds that visit your garden feed in different ways and levels, so you will want to provide plants of differing heights. Robins will scavenge on the ground looking for worms, grubs and insects. Finches and other seed eaters will be in amongst your perennials looking for seeds. Some birds such as woodpeckers prefer to be up in the tree tops.

Along with birds there is plenty of other wildlife that you can attract to your garden. Butterfly’s are no longer as common as they once were, so why not plant something like lavender, geraniums, hebe or a buddleja (Butterfly Bush) or two to attract them. These plants not only provide butterfly’s with food, but also produce attractive flowers, and in some cases a pleasant fragrance throughout the summer.

Bees are another form of wildlife that has been having problems in the last few years. Many people are nervous of bees, but they are in fact gentle creatures and will not sting unless provoked. Potentilla, penstemons, heathers, Lamium and ceanothus are always frequently visited by bees.

A pond in the garden will always attract a fair amount of wildlife. Frogs, toads and newts will always find your pond and move in. You will also attract a number of insects, some of which are quite beautiful such as dragonflies and damselflies. Other birds and animals will also visit the garden to grab a quick drink.

Maintaining a wildlife garden is a little less time consuming than some other garden styles. Trees and shrubs can be left to grow naturally. Shrubs only need pruning once or twice a year to encourage new growth. Perennials should be left to go to seed and tidied up in the spring before new growth starts.

Weeding can be less of a chore as well. I like to leave many of the weeds in place unless they are causing a problem and taking over. Many of the weeds have attractive flowers and provide food for the wildlife that visits your garden.

When designing your garden you want to create plenty of areas that your wildlife can take shelter in so that it feels safe from predator attack. Trees and dense shrubs are ideal for this. Try to use natural curves instead of straight lines, and don’t manicure you plants.

Why You Need Landscape Design and Lawn Landscaping in St Petersburg, FL

Lawn

Landscape design and lawn landscaping are not free, especially when done by reputable professionals. Because people are now cutting costs, you may be thinking that these are unnecessary expenses. That is not so. You actually need professional landscape design and lawn landscaping for your lawn. It is a good investment that will increase the market value of your property during this time when property values are sliding. Excellent landscape design and lawn landscaping will also result in not just a more beautiful lawn in St Petersburg, FL but also a more low maintenance and cost effective one.

Even low maintenance lawns need regular professional lawn landscaping maintenance services, especially for regular pest control. Lawns are commonly infested by white grubs, mole crickets and fungus. They have to be completely eliminated and proper steps should be taken to prevent them from coming back. It is, however, crucial that all pest control products used by the lawn landscaping maintenance service provider you choose in St Petersburg, FL are completely ecologically friendly and non toxic. Make sure that the health of your family and pets will not be put at risk and you do not harm the environment.

The exact same consideration should be given to lawn fertilization. This is necessary in regular lawn landscaping maintenance because without proper fertilization, lawns tend to develop brown grass discoloration which destroys the look of the lawn and totally negates the landscape design you spent for. Lawn fertilization also includes weed prevention. Make sure that the lawn landscaping maintenance service provider you choose in St Petersburg, FL uses ecologically friendly and non toxic organic fertilizers and weed prevention solutions.

Despite regular maintenance, lawns do get damaged. After all, grass is organic. Your contract with your lawn landscaping maintenance service provider should include lawn repair whenever necessary. Grass sod is usually not used hwen laying down an entire lawn because grass seed is much cheaper. When repairing just a small patch of lawn, however, sodding comes out cheaper because a patch of grass sod costs less than the smallest bag of grass seed sold in St Petersburg, FL.

One cause of lawn damage is heavy foot traffic. This can be prevented by including foot paths in your landscape design and lawn landscaping in St Petersburg, FL.

Another cause of many lawn problems is faulty landscape design that allows the presence of low areas in the lawn landscaping. These areas attract water pooling and water retention and poor air circulation, leading to the development of a variety of common lawn diseases in St Petersburg, FL.

Real estate agents have attested to the fact that properties with lawns that have great landscape design and lawn landscaping fetch higher prices in the market. Likewise, properties with lawns that are left unkempt may lose much of their market value. It therefore makes good financial sense for any property owner to invest wisely in professional landscape design, lawn landscaping and lawn maintenance. You should seek a reputable service provider in St Petersburg, FL backed up by testimonials from loyal clients. The lawns they tend will also speak of their expertise.

Crabgrass

Crabgrass grows quickly and is very adaptable. It thrives in lawns that are under fertilized and mowed too low. The worst thing about it is that it looks horrible, especially in an otherwise great lawn. These weeds are easy to control, but you’ve got to do it in the spring, before they get a good hold. Late spring and summer are too late to do anything. If you are going to apply an herbicide, early to mid-spring is the best time.

Dandelions

Dandelions grow well under the same conditions as crabgrass, under fertilized, thin and low mown lawns. This weed is a little harder to deal with than crabgrass, however. With dandelions, you need to pull out the entire root or it will spread and it is best to do this before the plant flowers and spreads its seeds. If you don’t feel like killing you back pulling out all the roots, you can use a broad-leaf herbicide, which is probably going to work best in the fall. Make sure to follow all of the directions on the container and pay particular attention to safety procedures.

Insects/Grubs

Insects are a normal part of every lawn and are often very good for your grass. However, too much of anything can be bad. Not only can they hurt your lawn, they can also become a nuisance in you home. There are many pesticides on the market that are very good at controlling the populations of many common insects. If you decide to use one, make sure, as above, that you follow the directions carefully. Many of these products are bad for humans and animals, as well as insects.

Grubs, in particular, are very bad for lawns in large numbers. If you have more than ten grubs per square foot in your lawn, and there are several ways to check that, they will start killing large sections of grass by munching on the roots. Pesticides will work on them, too, especially when used in late July or August. One natural way to get rid of them, or at least lower the population, is to introduce nematodes into your yard. These are natural parasites that feed on grubs. Check with your local lawn and garden center to find a product with nematodes that will work for you.

Animals

Animals can be hard a yard, too. Moles in particular can undermine the soil and leave trenches through your yard, especially in the spring when soil is softer. Most often, they dig through your yard to find grubs and earthworms to eat. Decreasing the grub population, and the populations of other insects, may make your yard less attractive to them. You can also try to barricade your yard by burying chicken wire about a foot down. This isn’t always effective as it is possible for them to dig deeper than that. Catching them in a trap or calling a professional exterminator are the surest ways to get rid of them.

Shade

Even species of grass that claim to be shade tolerant don’t like too much shade. Sunlight is crucial for the growth and development of grasses. Make sure to trim back your shade trees every three to five years. This will make sure that the grass under the tree will at least get some sun. You may also want to consider replacing grasses in these areas with some other sort of shade tolerant ground cover, which may hold up better, and then planting your shade tolerant grasses on the outer edges of the shaded area.

Heavily Compacted Soil

As your lawn sees more and more traffic, it gets packed down. One of the best things you can do is aerate your soil every year. You can generally rent light weight aerators at most lawn and garden centers and hook them to the back of your riding mower. This will help loosen up the soils and make it easier for water and nutrients to enter and get to the grass’ roots. If your soil has become too heavy, you may want to hire a professional to come out and aerate your yard using a piston driven aerator. This doesn’t have to be done every year, but can help when things become desperate.

Hydrilla Aquatic Feed

Weed And Feed

Hydrilla is a freshwater plant. It is a flora that matures up to the surface in water of about 20 feet deep.  This very common water plant can be found in all types of water: rivers, lakes, fenland, springs and the like.  This water flora can flourish in water that is very shallow or up to 20 feet deep.  This flora can grow in either oligotrophic (low nutrient) or eutrophic (high nutrient) water.

The Hydrilla is suited to more mild climates as it will only tolerate temperatures between 20 C and 27 C. This freshwater plant, Hydrilla, branches copiously and when it gets to the surface, it spreads its branches and forms dense mats.  It might have stems as long as 25 feet underwater in water!   The Hydrilla roots, also know as Rhizomes, are  frequently than not|by and large|mostly|in general] off-white or yellow in color. There are many ways a Hydrilla can reproduce.  Fragmentation, seeds, tubers and turions (auxiliary buds) are the primary ways the Hydrilla propagates.

The Hydrilla has many advantages when likened to other plants.  It can grow in very low light with 1% sunlight. Hydrillas absorb a great deal of foods from the water leaving little for the indigenous plants.  Hydrillas are labeled as a pestilent pest because of their fast growth rate that makes them a menace to other native floras.  It is considered to be dangerous because it is almost unseen properly before it totally tops out a lake, pond, or a specific area.  Hydrillas will ofttimes choke out native marine floras because they take up so much surface area absorbing the sunlight and nutrients.

Every year, millions of dollars worth of weed killers and mechanical harvesters are used to keep this horrific pest under proper control, so that it doesn’t cross the limit.  Since it harms the vegetation around it, individuals can’t even fish around areas these grow.   Slowed water flow and blocked up irrigation or flood control canals are as a result of Hydrilla over growth.  Swimming, boating, and angling all are seriously affected by it. When a lot of Hydrilla grows together, it can totally take down that areas water oxygen level.

The Elodea and Egeria are ofttimes mixed up with the Hydrilla.  In the case of a Hydrilla, there is one or more teeth located at the bottom of the midrib.  Elodea and Egeria do not have teeth present on their undersides. Neither Elodea nor Egeria has teeth on their bottom. Due to these teeth, we feel the harshness of these floras when we rub over from its base to the tip. The blossoms the Egeria create are also bigger than the Hydrilla.

Macro and micro invertebrates feed on Hydrilla.   Upon dying, these micro and macro organisms disintegrate and become food for other land and aquatic wildlife.  When this plant dies, their disintegration is done by bacteria and fungi and provides food called “detritus” for many marine invertebrates. Many ducks consume Hydrilla turions and tubers, but it is not believed a fine wildlife feed.

Feed It, Don’t Burn It – The Basics Of Lawn Fertilization

Weed And Feed Lawn What Time Of Year

Do you wish to know what a lawn actually is?  It is mainly 1000′s, maybe tens of millions, of small plants grouped so close together that they look like one unit.  Grass is not only one massive plant, it’s a bunch of tiny ones.  All life wants meals to grow and thrive; plants are not any different.  Plant food known as fertilizer and while many people remember to fertilize their gardens and home plants, many people forget the lawn needs it too.

Fertilizer is any material supplying a number of essential plant nutrients. The most common turf grass fertilizers include nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, however they could also embrace other essential mineral parts for turf grass growth.

Fertilizers will provide you with that lush inexperienced lawn you desire by helping the grass to develop stronger and healthier.  It additionally helps new seed to sprout faster, and establish a wholesome root system.

OK, the first questions many individuals ask at this level are “how much, how often, and when”.  Generally speaking, most lawns will want 4 applications of fertilizer per year.

Start in early Spring, about 30 days earlier than growing season begins, and then each 60 days after that until the fall.  The Spring application will get the grass off to a quick start and provide you with that rich green color you are after.

You need to remember to spread the correct amount of fertilizer.  Too little fertilizer will not achive the results you need and too much can harm, and even kill, your lawn.  The fertilizer package will give you the data you need.

The next common query owners have is “what kind of fertilizer should I use“.  And, as always that depends upon your particular needs.  There are two fundamental fertilizer sorts: complete and balanced.

Complete fertilizers consist of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in one product.  The bag will tell you the content of those nutrients in that order.  A fertilizer that doesn’t have all three parts is known as “incomplete”.   Whereas there are uses for “incomplete” fertilizers, typically, the continued use of, for example,  a 46-0-0 incomplete fertilizer may end in decrease turf high quality if the opposite important elements are usually not being provided by the soil.

Balanced fertilizers use specific, predetermined, ratios of the important components that best meet a particular grass’ needs. Turf grasses require nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium within the approximate ratio of 3-1-2, 4-1-2, or 8-1-3.

The type of grass you may have will determine the form of balanced fertilizer you need.  Your soil will even dictate, to a degree, which sort of fertilizer you need depending on how much of the various important parts are present naturally.

You could need to use a fertilizer that releases its nutrients over time instead of all at once. You might contemplate finding a fertilizer that is gradual release, meaning it releases its nutrients over time instead of all at once.  Most of these fertilizers can be found at most retailers and successfully stretch out the feedings.  The grass root systems will get stronger and fill in any naked spaces.  An additional advantage of this is that it might also serve as a method to manage weeds.  If the grass is taking over all the resources and area, weeds have no place to germinate or resources to develop!

You need to read the bag before you purchase a fertilizer..  You may as well ask someone at the store (who seems to know what they are speaking about) for help.  Be sure to follow the instructions on the package accurately.  Like we said before an excessive amount of or too little fertilizer can harm your lawn.  The package can even let you know the best conditions under which to use the product.

You need a spreader to use your fertilizer appropriately, within the quantities desired.  Remember, don’t fill your spreader on the lawn!  You will without doubt spill some of the fertilizer and if it gets on the lawn in excessive amounts you will have burn spots.  Fill your spreader in the driveway or garage to stop this.

We mentioned the necessity for a spreader in last| week’s lesson about planting seed.  Spreaders come in a variety of sorts and styles.  You may get handheld ones, rotary spreaders and drop spreaders.  I want the kind that you simply push, versus the hand held type.  The hand-held form can make a mess and get fertilizer all over your clothes if you don’t use it correctly.   The walk behind sort are easier to make use of in my opinion.  Simply ensure you get the type that has an adjustable spread setting so you can regulate the rate of drop depending on the application you might be using.

There is a strong movement right now for “green” type, chemical free fertilizers and weed control.  If that is your thing, I’m all for it, however your lawn results most likely won’t be affected much.

Vegetation soak up the vitamins they’re given whatever the source of these vitamins (natural or otherwise).  Natural fertilizers do not provide any more, or less, nutrients to the lawn.  Nonetheless, there could also be different environmental concerns (runoff, and how the standard fertilizer is made) that you may be concerned about.  Those factors are personal, though, and have little or no effect on how your lawn will look.

Many lawn fertilizers are designed to regulate weeds as well.  You don’t need weeds to eat up the nutrients you are providing to your grass (everybody hates freeloaders) so it makes sense that you’d wish to control weeds when you are feeding your lawn.

How to Manage Your Compost in Organic Garden

Autumn Weed And Feed

Composting can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. The best part about creating compost is that it can consist of any organic material and we all have access to plenty of that every single day because it is produced by the lawn, garden, and kitchen.  Compost is what happens when leaves, grass clippings, vegetable and fruit scraps, woodchips, straw, and small twigs are combined, then allowed to break down into a soil-like texture. Compost introduces and feeds diverse life in the soil, including bacteria, insects, worms, and more which support vigorous plant growth.

Compost is multi-faceted but not intended as a fertilizer. It offers only a relatively low proportion of nutrients, yet what it does is close to magical. In its finished form as mulch, it reduces evaporation, reduces or prevents weed growth, and insulates the soil from extreme temperature changes. Mulch also keeps the upper inches of the soil cooler in daytime, warmer at night.

Yet compost has humble beginnings. Common, easily accessible materials destined to decay together in a pile will give your soil the gift of minerals and other components it needs. The materials are indeed numerous.

Regardless of the particular ingredients, making compost is akin to making bread or beer; soil-digesting bacteria like yeasts need warmth, moisture, air and something to feed on to keep them alive and growing. Almost all of the practical problems associated with making compost stem from too much or too little of those basic factors.

Compost is created from layers of grass clippings, leaves, weeds, kitchen scraps and, if available, farm animal manure. If you have meat eaters in your home, don’t use their meat scraps, which will attract rodents. Also, do not use litter from your dog or cat; it doesn’t break down properly and contains too many pathogens.

Over the years, composting has gotten a reputation for being a time-consuming job, but this is not necessarily the case. You don’t need to build a big box or turn the pile every so often. A barrel, a hole in the ground or a pile on top of the ground is satisfactory.

The important requirement is to be sure the waste material is covered with soil, so it doesn’t attract rats, other rodents or flies. You can build your layers directly on the ground, without any frame at all; if you use a container, be sure it is well ventilated.

The trick to successful compost is balancing ingredients high in nitrogen–fresh grass clippings, other fresh, green plant matter, most kitchen scraps–with those high in carbon–leaves, straw, dried grass, washed eggshells, wheat germ or other milled grains that have become too rancid or old to use, and any dried, brown plant matter. Too much nitrogenous matter yields an anaerobic, smelly pile. Too much carbonaceous matter results in a pile that never heats up. The ideal ratio is one part nitrogen to three parts carbon.

Start with a layer of brush–small twigs, no large branches–a couple of inches deep; this will help your pile to breathe. Then, keeping in mind the 1 to 3 ratio of nitrogen to carbon, add a layer of mixed plant material. You may enrich the pile with horse or cow manure. These materials don’t break down; they simply add nutrients to the final product.

Then lightly water the pile so it’s evenly moist. Too much water will interfere with aeration; too little water and the pile won’t ferment. If your pile sits in the open, you should pull a tarp over it before a storm, and then remove the tarp after the rain stops so the pile can breathe. An 8-inch layer of straw mulch spread over the top of the pile serves the same purpose.

Alternate layers until the pile is 5 feet high by 5 feet wide by whatever length you choose. A properly made pile that is loosely packed and well aerated will reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees within a few days. It should smell like wet hay. If the pile fails to heat up, pull it apart and redo it by adding layers of fresh green matter. If the pile becomes anaerobic (is too wet to aerate), pull it apart, let it dry out, use it as mulch and start a new pile.

After three weeks, the pile will have shrunk in size; this is normal. Dig into the pile with a spading fork and completely turn it over until the contents are redistributed; the idea is to put unfermented particles in contact with those that are further along. Let the pile rest, so the temperature will rise again. Turn it a second time five weeks later, let it rest a few weeks and, with luck, you’ll have a rich, crumbly pile of “black gold.”

Also, air is vital to any composting process. Without air (anaerobic) composting is possible but unpleasant with the putrescent of rotting material assaulting your nose. It is usually because there is too much nitrogen and too little air in the mixture. If you have an abundance of trees on your property, autumn leaves can be plentiful and messy, but they are there for your use and can be easily gathered and stored in leaf bags.

Timing is crucial. Your pile is fully composted when it fails to heat up after being turned. Then it is ready to use. And use it with a good feeling, for it is your garden’s natural fuel. Remember your objective, the foundation of every successful garden, is to achieve healthy soil.

Compost supplies the soil with a rich, friable source of humus and helps retain moisture in the garden, in addition to supplying valuable nutrients. By placing grass clippings, fallen leaves and unused plant parts in a compost pile, you are preparing them, through decomposition, to be put back to work for you.

Composting actually recycles garden waste and returns the nutrients that have been taken from the soil. By using organic composting agents, it is possible to speed-up the process of decomposition.

Now that you’ve gotten that garden in, how do you take care of it?
